1. What is the Slovenian vignette?

The Slovenian vignette, officially called e-vinjeta, is a mandatory electronic toll for driving on highways and expressways in Slovenia. Since December 1, 2021, it is 100% dematerialized: nothing to stick on the windshield anymore. The vignette is linked to your license plate and automatically checked by license plate reading gantries.

It applies to all vehicles under 3.5 tons: cars, motorcycles, camper vans, vans, and light commercial vehicles. Heavy vehicles are subject to a separate toll system (DarsGo).

2. Who needs to buy a Slovenian vignette?

Any driver using a Slovenian motorway or expressway, even for a few kilometers. This is particularly the case if you cross Slovenia to Croatia (Zagreb, Istria, Dalmatia), Italy or Austria: the main transit routes (A1 Ljubljana–Koper, A2 Karawanken–Obrežje) are subject to the vignette from the border.

Good to know : the Karawanken tunnel (Austrian border) is subject to a separate toll, not covered by the vignette.

3. What is the price of the Slovenian vignette in 2026?

Category 7 days 1 month 1 year
1 — Motorcycles 31,90 € 55,90 € 6 months 84,90 €
2A — Cars and camper vans 39,90 € 55,90 € 149,90 €
2B — Vans 55,90 € 87,90 € 279,90 €

For a simple round trip to Croatia, the 7-day vignette is sufficient in most cases. For long vacations or two passages spaced more than a week apart, the 1-month vignette is more advantageous than two 7-day vignettes.

Motorcycles are the exception: category 1 has no monthly vignette. DARS sells it a 6-month vignette instead.

4. Category 2A or 2B: how to know?

The distinction is made based on the height of the vehicle above the first axle (front axle):

Category 2A

Height ≤ 1.30 m — cars, SUVs, station wagons, most MPVs, and all motorhomes ≤ 3.5 t regardless of their size.

Category 2B

Height > 1.30 m — vans, raised camper vans like Transporter\/Trafic, utility vehicles.

Attention : driving with a 2A vignette on a 2B vehicle is equivalent to driving without a vignette during a check. If in doubt, measure at the front of the vehicle.

5. When does the validity start?

You freely choose the start date at the time of purchase, up to 30 days in advance. The 7-day vignette covers 7 consecutive calendar days (from day J at 00:00 to day J+6 at 24:00, Slovenian time). The annual vignette covers 12 rolling months from the chosen date.

6. Controls and fines: what are the risks of driving without a vignette?

The Slovenian network is monitored by automatic license plate reading gantries and DARS patrols. Driving without a valid vignette (absent, expired, or incorrect category) exposes you to a fine of €300 to €800, payable immediately. Foreign plates, including French ones, are checked in the same way as Slovenian plates.

7. How to buy the Slovenian vignette online?

1

Select your vehicle category (motorcycle, car, van) and the duration (7 days, 1 month, 1 year).

2

Enter your license plate, country, and start date of validity.

3

Pay by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Vignette activated immediately, receipt by email.

Please check your license plate before validating: a registered vignette is neither changeable nor refundable.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to stick anything on the windshield?

No. The vignette is electronic: the control is done by license plate reading.

Is the vignette transferable to another vehicle?

No, it is linked to the license plate entered at the time of purchase.

What happens if I change my license plate?

For Slovenian plates, a transfer is possible with DARS under certain conditions; for foreign plates, the vignette remains attached to the original plate.

Are national roads toll roads?

No. The vignette only applies to highways (A) and expressways (H). You can cross Slovenia on national roads without a vignette, but the journey is significantly longer.

Does my trailer require a vignette?

No, trailers towed by a vehicle ≤ 3.5 t do not require an additional vignette.
